Umred Opencast Inundation

23.09.2010

Introduction

  • Umred OCP was a 3.5MTPA capacity mine of WCL.

  • The mine was producing about 4.5% of total WCL’s output at that time.

  • A river named Amb was flowing through the coal bearing area of the mine.

  • The river was diverted 3rd time in the last 4 years to make coal available for mining.

  • This is the second fatal accident in WCL mines in two days as 2 person killed in roof fall of sillewara UG mines just couple of days ago.

Dragline:

  • A dragline of size 15/90 was in operation at that time in umred ocp

  • The dragline was procured from erstwhile USSR(now Russia) for around 2.7 Cr. was of 1978 make.

  • The dragline weighed about 2000 tonnes.

Accident:

  • On 23.09.2010 around 6:45 AM,because of multiple causes, a bench slide occurred

  • It damaged the embankment, about 150m of embankment ruptured and millions of litres of water flowed into the mine.

  • Due to accumulation of water at the base of the dragline dump weakened it.

  • And the dump started sliding.

  • Shovel and other equipment were withdrawn.

  • The Russian 15/90 dragline was also in marching mode for withdrawal, but it was too late.

  • Being an old dragline(1978 make), marching speed was less.

  • As a result the dragline slides about 70m horizontally and 25m vertically down, damaging it completely.

Accident:

  • 1 dragline was completely damaged

  • 1 drill and 1 dozer got buried.

  • Dragline operator was rescued but died on way to the hospital

  • An Electrician present in the dragline was rescued with serious injuries.

  • This accident caused a production loss of at least 3 million tonnes and financial loss to the tune of 400 crores
